Snakes! Travel Photo Thursday: Nov 10th.

During the wet season and for some months after, you can catch a boat ride from Siem Reap, Cambodia, across the Tonle Sap then up a maze of canals to Battambang. It's a long and hot 6 hour ride, if the boat doesn't run aground, as it often does when water levels are dropping! With the un-muffled motor thumping away loudly you can never hear what any kid is saying about the snake he is showing you - the one he caught a week ago and shows every tourist they can paddle up to, sort of like Somali pirates hi-jacking your ship! Lots of kids run around with snakes sadly, tough on those beautiful reptiles.
It is the best trip ever! Do it if you have the chance. Take plenty of water, sunscreen and a big hat!

The crowded departure docks.

Cruising past floating villages.

Travel Photo Thursday is on again where travel bloggers post up their great pics from around the world. Join us. Post up yours and head over to Nancie's Budget Traveler's Sandbox and link into the fun!

Here's more kids with snakes- or are they ripping you off with green sticks?

I think the kids are cute! But the snakes could be really scary!

Brrrr, I rather not handle snakes! I grew up in the mountains where there are lots of vipers, and I don't like snakes, I don't kill them but I stay away from them!

Hate to see the snakes getting handled that way, but I guess everybody's trying to make a buck, eh?

They’re so cute - the kids not the snakes! That is one crowded departure dock. I couldn’t take the heat and sun….well, maybe if I had a big enough hat and a gallon of sunscreen. But I KNOW I couldn't take the snakes ;-)
Such clear pictures Jim. Happy travels!

Hi Andresa, you have a pretty good blog there. I'll have to check out the Pillipines sometime!

Good system Alessandra, just leave them be. God's creatures after all.

Jim said...

Yep Bret, sadly animals don't figure highly in Vietnamese or Cambodian concerns...they're just food after all.

Can understand that Jade but they really are very interesting creatures, and they have a place in this world. Nature's rodent controllers. Countries that have decimated their snake population have a huge loss off stored grain, as much as 50% can be lost/spoiled because no snakes to keep rats and mice down.

Hi Debra, nice to see you checking in. We've been too long apart so I hopped in to read yours today. Very profound article again.

Snakes give me the creeps. I just hope those are not poisonous.

6 hours on a noisy and hot boat....not so sure...

Jim said...

They're dead Michael, dead! You really scared of dead snakes?

Jim said...

Long and hot day Denise but so much going on around you all the time. Floating village life is so interesting. Real fun when the boat runs aground, but they backed up and away we went. Sometimes the passengers have to hop out into the mud and push the boat off!

Are they really snakes? I couldn't tell, maybe because the kids didn't look scared. I'm scared of snakes!
The water doesn't look too inviting but the boat does.

Missed Tonle Sap when I went to Cambodia. It was in the middle of dry season and the lake had shrunk to a third of its size. I wanted so much to see the lake cuz I remember it on the map I obsessed with when I was a kid. But with all this talk about snakes...I breathed a sigh of relief that I didn't get to go. Just not a big fan of snakes. :)

Just catching up, Jim. Sorry I took so long. Sometimes the social networking on this Travel Photo Thursday takes me longer than writing a blog post. But, I know there will always be something great here. Thanks for sharing, as always.
