Travel Photo Thursday June 16th.

It's Travel Photo Thursday June 16th.
Here's a photo of sunset taken last month at Kubu Island, Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana.

Makgadikgadi Pans is one of the largest salt pans in the world, though the area is comprised of many salt pans interspersed with sandy desert. The remnants of a dried up ancient lake once fed by the waters that now drain into the Okavango Delta. It is thought an uplift in the land cut of the water inflow and the lake dried up. Kubu Island would once have been surrounded by water. The pans are a thin salty crust except during the rainy season when the pans will fill with water. Driving over them during or after the rainy season is fraught with the chance of vehicles bogging, so don't try it then.

Nancie at Budget Travellers Sandbox has her usual interesting photo up for Thursday and there's a heap of others posting links to theirs also. Check them out. Great fun and informative.

EDIT: In response to so many comments I will be posting up a series of photos I took at Kubu Island. This was an incredible place to take sunset and sunrise photos. We arrived in the early evening and I was out taking pics as the sun settled down to the horizon. The above was taken just before sunset, 'The Golden Hour' and the colours thrown up on the grass and the rocks of Kubu Island just had to be captured.

Next morning I was up at 5.30 am, still dark, but I clambered up on those rocks and awaited morning's surprise.
Come back and join me for those!

We travelled with Russell Frankish of Greenbushpig Safaris , guide for Britz Rentals self drive 4WD, 13 day tour of Botswana from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls and return. For more information check out those links, or contact me. A most exciting tour!

Interesting, an island surrounded by salt flats. I bet it'd be a challenge driving there if it ever rained!

The road, if you can call it a road- is closed during rainy season and so a 200 kms detour around the pans.

Great photo, Jim. Don't think I'd be attempting to get anywhere near there in rainy season. :)

Thanks for all your comments everyone!
I will post up a series of photographs I took there. The vast open salt plains and clear skies allows the suns light through at very low angles and I have so many photos taken at sunset, and then early the following morning. I'll post up shortly.

You better beware David that visiting Africa has its traps! One trip is not enough, getting under your skin and calling you back again and again!

Hi Nancie. Got many more taken there in the evening and again the next morning.

Thanks Alejandro. Was a great spot for taking pictures, clear skies, flat land to the horizon so you could get real low light angles onto the subject.
